Is Bariatric Surgery for Weight Loss the Right Option for You?

Bariatric Surgery

Obesity is fast becoming a social problem in many countries. People are becoming fatter and fatter day by day. As obesity increases, the risks of developing serious health problems also increase. To treat obesity and its complications, patients can turn to bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery is a type of procedure that physically limits the amount of food the stomach can hold, causing weight loss by restricting the amount of food a patient can eat. So, is bariatric surgery for weight loss the right option for you? Let's have a look.

Bariatric Surgery is a weight management program. Bariatric Surgery is a type of procedure that physically limits the amount of food the stomach can hold, causing weight loss by restricting the amount of food a patient can eat. Obesity is a disease. It is an abnormal accumulation of fat within the body.

Type of Bariatric Surgery :

  • Gastric Bypass: The gastric bypass is the most commonly performed bariatric procedure. It creates a ‘small stomach’ and a ‘large intestine’. In gastric bypass surgery, the stomach is ‘divided’ from the small intestine. The surgeon creates a small pouch out of the upper stomach. This pouch is then linked directly to the lower segment of the small intestine. The surgeon will then connect the lower segment of the small intestine to the lower stomach. There can be different bariatric procedures to achieve the weight loss goal.
  • Gastric banding: The gastric banding procedure is the second most common type of bariatric surgery. In this procedure, the surgeon places a band around the top portion of the stomach to create a pouch. The upper portion of the stomach is not restricted by the band. The surgeon will remove a portion of the stomach to create a small pouch that can hold only a small amount of food. The surgeon will then attach a band to the upper portion of the stomach. The band creates a smaller pouch above the band that limits the volume of food that can be eaten.
  • Gastric Sleeve Surgery: The gastric sleeve is another type of bariatric surgery. In this procedure, the surgeon creates a small stomach pouch from the upper part of the stomach. The stomach pouch holds only a small amount of food. The surgeon will remove a large portion of the stomach that connects to the esophagus. The portion of the stomach that is removed is about the size of a banana. The decision to undergo bariatric surgery for weight loss should be made after considering all the factors.

The Professional You Choose

There are some factors you must keep in mind while choosing a physician for the surgery. Choose a professional who is board-certified. Check if the physician is board-certified in bariatrics. It is an organization that endorses bariatric surgery as a scientifically proven treatment for morbid obesity. Consult a nutritionist or dietician who is a good weight loss specialist or bariatric dietician.
